The Importance of Early Detection:

Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States. Every year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

Over 80% of lung cancers could be cured if detected at an early stage. Catching lung cancer early while it is still localized to the lung is essential. By catching malignant tumors when they are still small, they can be surgically removed before the disease spreads to other areas of the body.

You qualify for lung cancer screening if you:

  • Are currently smoking or have quit within the last 15 years
  • Are between 50 and 80 years old and healthy enough to undergo treatment
  • Have a smoking history of a least 20 pack-years (1 pack a day for 20 years, 2 packs a day for 10 years, half a pack a day for 40 years, or the equivalent)
  • Have no signs, symptoms, or history of cancer for the last 5 years
  • Have completed a “shared decision making” session with your physician, smoking cessation counseling (if applicable), and have an order for the exam indicating they have occurred.
