Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is a Chest X-Ray Performed?
The chest x-ray is performed to evaluate the heart and lungs, and chest when a patient is experiencing:
- Shortness of breath
- Persistent cough
- Chest pain
Chest x-rays are also performed to help diagnose many conditions including:
- Pneumonia
- Heart failure
- Emphysema
- Heart problems
What Will Occur During a Chest X-Ray Procedure?
Our technologist will help to position your body. The chest will be placed against the x-ray equipment. Two views of the chest will be taken, one from the back and the other from the side of the body (chest wall side views).
You will be asked to be still and to hold your breath for a few seconds while the picture is being taken. This is to ensure the best quality pictures (chest x-ray produces).
The chest x-ray is usually completed within 15 minutes. The x-ray beam will pass through your chest to produce images of your lungs, heart, and other structures. The diagnostic images will then be reviewed by a radiologist.
How Should I Prepare for a Chest X-Ray?
- There is no preparation required for a chest x-ray.
- You will be asked to undress and wear a gown during the exam.
- You may be asked to remove jewelry, body piercings, and any objects that may interfere with the exam.
- Please inform the technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
What Are the Benefits and Risks of Getting a Chest X-Ray?
The benefits of Chest X-Ray:
- Easy to use.
- Widely available, making it convenient for patients.
- Radiation exposure does not remain in a patient’s body after the exam.
- Effective for quick diagnosis of certain medical conditions (health conditions).
Risks you should be aware of:
- You will be exposed to a small amount of radiation during your exam (radiation dose). However, the benefits outweigh the potential risk.
- Please inform the technologist if you are pregnant or think there is a possibility you may be pregnant.
Chest x-rays require minimal time and effort, and produce pictures of your heart and lungs, providing a quick view of the chest to help diagnose any issues. Test results are usually available shortly after the procedure.
